Weekly Round-up

This week…

Wow! What an amazing collection of food for the Food Bank. A huge ‘Thank you’ for your Harvest donations, these will be much appreciated.

We hope that you enjoy our short Harvest film – the link will be emailed to you so keep a look out in your inboxes.

Having completed our ‘The Way Back Home’ writing, this week the children looked at a different image and identified the nouns they could see and thinking of some adjectives to describe them. The then went on to write their own sentences, using these adjectives to make their writing exciting.

In Maths, we have been continuing to look at part-part-whole models and using these to work on mathematical skills such as adding more, counting on and finding a part. It would be fantastic if the children could continue working on number formation ready for Term 2 to commence.

Here are a couple of Maths links that are great for testing/reinforcing number bonds and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s,

After a term of looking at collage, working in the style of an artist and experimenting with surrealism, the children produced their final piece of artwork. They all worked incredibly hard to follow the brief of a space themed collage and were all incredibly proud of what they produced. I wonder if they can tell you the name of the artist/illustrator that we looked at (Eric Carle). Can they explain ‘surrealism’ to you?

As part of our Science work, we have continued to look at the seasons, thinking about the weather and what is associated with the seasons. We had lots of fun creating water vortexes to mirror what tornadoes look like!

Parenting Smart (Place2Be)

The children’s mental health charity, Place2Be, has launched a new website aimed at helping parents with typical situations they can find themselves in with their children.

Advice can be found on over forty topics including:

Understanding sibling rivalry

My child is lying, what does it mean, what should I do?

My child has trouble going to sleep

My child says ‘I hate you!’

Supporting healthy gaming habits

The Parenting Smart website can found here: https://parentingsmart.place2be.org.uk/

It is a great website which you may wish to take a look at.

Weekly round up

This week in Maths we have been continuing our work on addition and subtraction to 10. We have introduced the part, whole model and the children have been using this to find fact families. In English we have been investigating nouns and adjectives and using these in our sentences about The Boy. We have had some fantastic sentences and we are all remembering our full stops and capital letters.

Having created their own painted paper last week in art, inspired by Eric Carle, the children used this to create their own collages in their sketch books. They worked really hard and some even created their own backgrounds using coloured pencils.

We started our Science work on weather this week. We all really enjoyed being scientists, observing today’s weather in our school grounds. We used a thermometer and found that the outside temperature was 18 degrees Celsius.

BUG CLUB

Well done to Class 3 and Class 4 this week. We have lots of children using Bug Club and talking about the books they have read in school.

It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

READING RAFFLE

Every week we hold a reading raffle in school. To enter this the children will need to read at least three times a week and then their names will be put into the raffle; they will also move along the class race track. Please remember that the children can read books from home, the library as well as their school books and Bug Club-these all count towards weekly reading. If your child’s name is pulled out they will receive a golden coin that can be used in our new Reading Raffle vending machine. Please remember to record when you hear your child read in their reading diaries. We will take these in on a Friday morning

Weekly Roundup

We have continued looking at capital letters and using them for the start of our sentences this week in our English lessons. On Friday we wrote our own fantastic sentences about a picture from our story The Way Back home.

In Maths we have been looking at ordering and comparing numbers, including ordinal numbers (1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd …). We have also worked with a number line to 10 and enjoyed Active Maths on the school field on Friday. Art took on a ‘surreal’ feel this week as the children looked at surreal space art created using collage. They watched a video clip from the Tate Kids website which explained what surreal art is. Click on the link below to go to the website.

A huge ‘WELL DONE!’ to all of the children who participated in the cross-country yesterday-they should be very proud of
their efforts…and medals. It was great to see such enthusiasm and determination.

BUG CLUB

Well done to Class 4 who were top of the bug club KS1 leader board this week. They read 26 books – amazing!!
When the children go on Bug Club this can be written in their reading diary and will count towards their weekly reading for
the reading raffle. The children who have been pulled out of the reading raffle so far have really enjoyed choosing their book
from the vending machine.
It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with
their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

Weekly Round-up

This week…

In English, we have been look at capital letters and how to form them. The children have done a fantastic job at looking at some pictures from The Way Back Home and labeling them using capital letters.

In Maths we have been looking at comparing numbers using the language ‘greater then’, ‘less than’, ‘equal to’ and using the associated symbols > < =. There are lots of brilliant videos that we’ve been dancing along to to help up remember which one is which!

Having created their own painted paper last week in art, inspired by Eric Carle, the children used this to create their own collages in their sketch books. They worked really hard and had some great ideas of what they wanted their masterpieces to look like.

The children have continued to develop their map skills in Geography, learning the compass directions and associated vocabulary. We even had a go at using compasses in small groups to find north, east, south and west in our classrooms.

WATER!

Please can we remind you that children should only be bringing water in their bottles to school-no juice or flavoured water. This is a whole school expectation.

BUG CLUB

Well done to both Class 3 and Class 4 for beating last’s weeks score of bug club books read! More children accessed Bug Club last week, read books and completed activities to demonstrate their understanding of the texts read. Great work!

It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

Weekly Round-up

Hello and welcome to our first Class 3 and 4 blog post!

It has been an exciting start to the year so far, getting to know each other, learning new routines and not to mention the excitement of an alien landing!

On Monday 6th September, whilst sat getting ready for the day we heard a strange noise followed by a loud ‘crash’ sound. We looked out of the classroom window to find…

AN ALIEN SPACESHIP!!

Scattered on the ground were boxes containing an important message and special ‘alien detective’ glasses! After following the clues we found… Thorg and Zog, our very own aliens! We are feeding our aliens daily with alien words as well as teaching them about Maths, English and everything else that we do!

What an exciting way to start the new school year!

This week…

As part of our ‘Out of this world’ topic we are using ‘The Way Back Home,’ by Oliver Jeffers, as our stimulus text for English. We have looked at using finger spaces and writing on the line and the children have written some fantastic sentences about The Boy and his plane.

In Maths the children are revisiting place value concepts, which has involved sorting and counting numbers and objects to 10.

We have started looking at ‘Collage’ in art and this week we created pages in our sketchbooks to show what different materials we could use. We also talked about the different textures that could be created.

We are really lucky to have 2 coaches from Oxford United who are working with us in our PE lessons this term. The children had lots of fun this week and are already looking forward to their session next week.

BUG CLUB

The children have all got a username and password for Bug Club, which is an invaluable reading resource-we have put this in their reading diaries. Please support your child in accessing this resource and if you have any difficulties, please get in touch. It would be great if your child could access Bug Club at least a couple of times a week, not only does it help your child with their reading but also the comprehension of what they are reading.

READING RAFFLE

Every week we hold a reading raffle in school. To enter this the children will need to read at least three times a week and then their names will be put into the raffle; they will also move along the class racetrack. HOMEWORK

Red phonics books-please make sure these are in school on a Friday morning so that we can put their new words in for them to practice. It would be useful to practice say the sounds and reading the words and it’s always good to practice writing them too. These sound be familiar to them as they will be the sounds covered in lessons that week.
